The CBME Surgical Skills Training Program is a 4-day intensive, hands-on surgical training experience crafted for medical students of all years who wish to strengthen their clinical foundations and surgical dexterity. The program focuses on integrating theory with practical skill development through real surgical tools, simulation models, and ethically sourced bovine specimens.

The hospital rotation component will take place after the 4-day training, providing real-world exposure in the operating theatres and surgical wards of Gudushauri Hospital.

Program Details

  • Duration: 4 Full Days (Saturday–Sunday–Saturday–Sunday)
  • Total Hours: 24+ hours of hands-on and guided learning (5–6 hrs/day)
  • Batch Size: 100 students (divided into groups of 5 for supervised sessions)
  • Location: EduGradient Workspace (Margot Hotel, Tbilisi) & Gudushauri Hospital
  • Dates: 13th, 14th, 20th, 21st December 2025
  • Materials: E-workbook & printed surgical notes provided

Eligibility: Open to all medical students from 1st to 6th year

Program Structure & Curriculum

Each day is carefully structured to build core competencies while maintaining a logical progression from basic skills to advanced surgical procedures.

Day 1 — Foundations of General Surgery

Focus: Orientation, Principles, and Basic Skill Acquisition

  • Surgical asepsis, sterile techniques, and safety protocol
  • Surgical instrument handling and precision practice
  • Suturing techniques: simple interrupted, continuous, subcuticular
  • Knot-tying and tissue-handling drills
  • Hands-on Procedures:

    • Tendon Repair
    • Anterior Abdominal Wall Closure
    • Lingual Suturing
    • Cardiac Suturing (Introductory Module)
  • Demonstration: Epistaxis Control

Day 2 — Gastrointestinal and Abdominal Procedures

Focus: Core open and laparoscopic surgery fundamentals

  • Discussion: Surgical anatomy of GI tract, vascular supply, and closure principles
  • Hands-on Procedures:

    • Appendectomy
    • Hernia Repair
    • Pyloroplasty
    • Omentopexy
    • Intestinal Anastomosis (End-to-End & Side-to-Side)
  • Demonstration: Nissen Fundoplication
  • Discussion Topics: Postoperative Complications, Bleeding, and DVT Prevention

Day 3 — Thoracic and Airway Surgery

Focus: Thoracic exposure, airway access, and emergency procedures

  • Hands-on Procedures:

    • Lung Suturing
    • Cricothyroidotomy
    • Tracheal Anastomosis
    • Liver Lobectomy (bovine model)
  • Demonstration:

    • Extraction of stones from CBD
    • T-tube placement in CBD
    • Blakemore Tube Placement
  • Discussion: Oxygenation, Ventilation, and Hemostasis in Thoracic Surgery

Day 4 — Advanced Vascular and Reconstructive Surgery

Focus: Integration, reconstruction, and microvascular techniques

  • Hands-on Procedures:

    • Vascular Anastomosis (end-to-end & end-to-side)
    • Seldinger Technique (on Aortic Model)
    • Split & Full-Thickness Skin Graft Transplantation
    • Amputation (Thigh Level)
    • Embolectomy
  • Demonstration: Cholecystectomy
  • Group Discussion: Ethical Decision-Making in Surgery, Case Scenarios & Wrap-Up

Post-Training Hospital Rotations

The following week, all students will participate in structured hospital sessions at Gudushauri Hospital.

  • Visit operating theatres, emergency wards, and OPDs.
  • Observe live surgical procedures and assist under supervision.
  • Apply procedural logic from simulation to patient settings.

Top 10 performers (based on skill tests and faculty assessment) will be offered a 2-week observership in General Surgery under Dr. Lasha Gulbani.

Certification, Letters of Recommendation & Observerships

  • Certificate endorsed by EduGradient and Georgian Hernia Association.
  • Skill-based Letter of Recommendation for all participants.
  • Observership Certificate for top achievers at Gudushauri Hospital.

Scholarships

  • Students with CGPA above 3.5 are eligible for a 50 GEL scholarship (fee reduced to 230 GEL).
  • Proof of CGPA must be uploaded during registration and presented on Day 1.

  • Scrubs and white coats are mandatory for all sessions.
  • Students must bring personal gloves, notepads, and ID cards.
